The intuition that gets horses sore
Thicker equals softer equals kinder. It is how padding works in almost every other context a thicker insole, a thicker mattress, a thicker cushion. Riders apply the same logic under a saddle and it goes wrong, because a saddle is not a shoe.
A shoe flexes around what you put inside it. A saddle tree does not. It is a rigid frame built to a particular width, and everything you place between it and the horse reduces the space that frame has to sit in. Add half an inch of pad under a saddle that fitted correctly and you have not softened it you have made it half an inch too narrow.
Riding Warehouse uses an analogy that captures it exactly: "If you have shoes that fit your feet perfectly with a thin pair of socks, wearing a thicker pair will make them tight and uncomfortable."
What the pressure research actually found
Most of what is known here comes from pressure-mat work, where a sensor mat with over two hundred individual sensors sits between saddle and horse and records force distribution while the horse is ridden.
Two numbers come up in that literature and they are routinely confused with each other.
Around 4.7 kPa is the mean capillary pressure in the tissue of the horse's back. Above that, blood flow through the capillaries can be occluded. That is a physiology figure it describes when circulation is interrupted, not when a saddle is doing harm.
Above 11 kPa mean, or 30 kPa maximum, is the threshold actually used to flag risk of inducing back pain. Those two figures were proposed by Nyikos et al. in 2005 and, per a review of pressure-mat studies of saddle fitting, remain the most widely used thresholds in the field.
The distinction matters because the lower figure gets quoted as though it were the damage threshold. It is not. Brief pressure above capillary pressure happens constantly in normal riding; sustained mean pressure above 11 kPa is the thing associated with back pain, and duration matters as much as peak.
What this means for pad choice is simpler than the numbers suggest: padding redistributes pressure, it does not remove it. A thick pad under a saddle that is already too wide may feel more stable, but it achieves that by moving pressure somewhere else rather than eliminating it.
The rule that follows
Use the thinnest pad that still absorbs sweat and protects your saddle. Add thickness only when you are solving a specific, identified problem, and only when a saddle fitter has confirmed that padding is the right tool for it.

How to tell your pad is too thick
Four signs, roughly in order of how early you will notice them.
You cannot lift the pad into the gullet. Tack up, then try to pull the pad up into the channel at the withers. If there is no slack to lift, the pad is filling the space the horse's spine needs.
The saddle sits higher and feels perched. You notice it as a subtle loss of contact the horse feels further away than usual and the saddle rocks slightly at walk.
You are girthing tighter than you used to. A thick pad compresses under load, so the girth that was snug at mounting is loose ten minutes later, and the reflex is to over-tighten at the start.
Dry spots in the sweat pattern. After work, look at the sweat marks. Even dampness is what you want. A dry patch surrounded by wet is a place where pressure stopped circulation which is exactly the mechanism the capillary-occlusion figure describes.
When thickness is the right answer
There are real cases. A horse coming back into work after time off, with a topline that has dropped and will rebuild over a few months. A saddle that fits well but slightly wide, pending a professional re-flock. A horse with a genuinely flat back where the panel bridges.

Thickness and slipping are related
Riders often reach for a thicker pad when the real complaint is that the pad will not stay put. The two feel connected a thin pad seems flimsy, a thick one substantial but thickness makes slipping worse rather than better. More pad means more compression under the girth, which means more slack once the horse is warm.

Thickness is the last of four decisions, and it only makes sense once the first three are settled. Shape comes first, then size, then material and by the time you reach thickness, most of the work is done.
